Fausto this quote was taken from your first post on your blog dated September 05, 2004. What happened since then? Is the country still "in a mess"? Who put Malta "in the mess" in the first place?

The "mess" is political in nature and, in many cases, has not seen many improvements. The Greens are clueless and delusional. Labour no policies then, it has some bungled ones now.
The Nationalists too, they have made a few slip-ups along the way. My second posting, incidentally, was about the removal of the bread subsidy; it has since been re-introduced. Ministers whose behaviour was unbecoming -- Mugliette and Dalli -- were not definitively shown the way out. There were threats of the dreaded price orders.
But there were certainly improvements on the government side since 2004, the most remarkable of which, the euro and the first social security reforms, makes the Gonzi government more fiscally clear-headed than its predecessor.
For me the threats to democracy in Malta have been twofold. The MLP is so inept that I have never been able to percieve it as a potential Government. The MLP has continued to be a failure to be an effective opposition to the excesses of the PN Government. Having said that, I appreciate that around half of Malta disagrees with me about the MLP.
Secondly in a democracy everybody's vote should count within reasonable limits. A 5% share of the votes should translate into 3 seats in parliament.
This is the fault of both the PN and the MLP to deny a part of the electorate the right to vote according to their conscience and to the representatives of their choice.
